When printing in black, both models support a maximum resolution of 1200 x 1200 dpi. This resolution is certainly sufficient to give you high-quality documents with sharp and crisp text. It is also good enough for small images.

However, when printing in color and using certain HP photo papers, both models can give a maximum resolution of 4800 x 1200 optimized dpi. HP OfficeJet 3830 and HP Envy 4520 use the same ink cartridges; they work with dye-based color inks and pigment-based black inks. Hence, both of these printers can produce images and photos with decent quality. The sharpness is good, and the color quality is also good.

The difference between HP OfficeJet 3830 vs HP Envy 4520 is the print speeds. HP OfficeJet 3830 is generally slower. It only prints at 8.5 ISO ppm when printing black, 6 ISO ppm when printing color. HP Envy 4520 is a bit faster, capable of printing at 9.5 ISO ppm when printing black and 6.8 ppm when printing color.

Features and Capabilities
These two models come with very different features. Depending on what you need, one of them may be more useful than the other. We will see the distinctive pros and cons of each model in terms of features.

HP OfficeJet 3830 has the fax functionality. The built-in fax has a maximum resolution of 300 x 300 dpi and supports multi-color pages. So, although it is not suitable for faxing high-quality images, it is very handy for documents. The fax is quite fast; it can send one page within 4 seconds. The memory can store up to 99 black-and-white pages, but note that multi-color pages of a higher resolution do consume more space.

Unfortunately, HP OfficeJet 3830 does not support automatic duplex printing. You need to manually turn the pages in order to print on both sides of each page. This is inconvenient if you often need to perform duplex printing for documents of multiple pages.

HP Envy 4520 does not have the fax functionality. It is not a problem for most people because people nowadays use email instead. Still, if you need an all-in-one printer with fax, this model is not recommended.

The great thing about HP Envy 4520 is the automatic duplex printing. This model is capable of printing on both sides of a page in one go. Now, it is a very useful feature. You can easily print thick documents without having to turn the pages manually. It also saves a lot of time.

Paper Trays
HP OfficeJet 3830 has a smaller input tray. The maximum capacity is only 60 sheets. As the effect, this printer is good enough for occasional printing, but it isn’t really practical for people who print frequently. You will need to reload the paper sheets often. Meanwhile, the output tray capacity is 25 sheets.

HP Envy 4520 comes with a larger input tray, whose maximum capacity is 100 sheets. The bigger paper tray is definitely beneficial for all kinds of user. It is good for people who print documents on a daily basis, and you won’t need to reload the paper sheets too frequently. Nevertheless, the output tray capacity is similar, which is 25 sheets.

HP OfficeJet 3830 and HP Envy 4520 come with similar connectivity features. They each have a USB 2.0 port for a wired connection to a computer. They each also have built-in Wi-Fi for a connection to your home’s wireless network. The wireless connection is needed for mobile printing. However, they have slightly different mobile printing capabilities.

Both models are compatible with the HP ePrint mobile app, Apple AirPrint, and Wireless Direct Printing. By using one of these options, you can print from your smartphone or tablet, even when you are not at home.

The difference is that HP OfficeJet 3830 is not Mopria certified, while HP Envy 4520 is Mopria certified. The Mopria standards allow mobile devices to print directly to printers of different brands. Through a Mopria app, you can print to an HP, Canon, Xerox, or Samsung printer. In short, HP OfficeJet 3830 can’t work with the Mopria app, while HP Envy 4520 can.

Design and Dimensions
Each of these two printers is equipped with a 2.2-inch monochrome touchscreen for control. HP OfficeJet 3830 has the display placed on the left side, whereas HP Envy 4520 has it on the center. HP OfficeJet 3830 is larger and heavier than HP Envy 4520.

HP OfficeJet 3830 measures 17.71 inches x 22.55 inches x 10 inches when the trays are all extended. The bulky shape is due to the fax portion of the unit. The weight is about 12.37 lbs. It is still quite compact and lightweight, so you can take it from your home to the office when needed.

HP Envy 4520 measures 17.53 inches x 22.22 inches x 5.04 inches. On the top, you can find a flat lid of the scanner. It doesn’t have fax, so the body is slimmer and more compact. The weight is about 11.93 lbs.
