Canon MG6620 is a very affordable and budget-friendly photo printer. If you need a printer that can print high-quality photos at a relatively low cost, this Canon printer makes an excellent choice. However, this particular model has been updated and replaced by Canon MG6820. So, what is actually the difference between Canon MG6620 vs MG6820? Is the newer version really better?

Canon MG6620 vs MG6820

Design
If you put the two printers side by side, you can see that they are very identical to each other. Canon MG6820 is clearly a sibling to Canon MG6620, as it retains most of the design and features. It has a 3.0-inch color touch screen for control, along with just a handful of buttons to keep it neat and simple. Unlike the more expensive model we previously discussed in Canon MG6620 vs MG7520, these printers here don’t have an automatic output tray. Each has a built-in scanner that also functions as a copier.

Canon MG6620 is available in three color options, which are black, white, and burnt orange. Canon MG6820 has four color options, but they are rather plain-looking: black, white, black & silver, and white & silver.

Ink Quality
The most important difference between the old Canon MG6620 and the new Canon MG6820 is the ink system. They use different cartridges that are not compatible with each other. Canon MG6620 works with PGI-250 and CLI-251 ink cartridges, whereas Canon MG6820 works with PGI-270 and CLI-271 ink cartridges. The new model’s inks are better, especially the black and red inks. It produces darker and deeper blacks as well as more solid and more vivid reds.

Performance
The other mechanical parts of Canon MG6620 and Canon MG6820 are apparently still similar. They offer similar specifications and performance. Their scanners have an optical resolution of 1200 x 2400 dpi, and they can scan a color page within 18 seconds. They also have the same maximum printing resolution, which is 4800 x 1200 dpi. Their black printing speed is 15 ipm, whereas the color printing speed is 9.7 ipm. In general, these two printers are most valuable for photo printing. If your main use is text printing, there are cheaper and faster printer models available.

Connectivity
Both models have built-in Wi-Fi with Canon Print, AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, and PictBridge. They also have a memory card slot for direct printing from an SD card. If you usually print photos from your digital camera by moving the memory card to a PC, the memory card slot greatly eases the whole process.

The difference between Canon MG6620 vs MG6820 is the Mopria app that is added to the new model. The Mopria app is compatible with Android 4.4+ devices, and it is very useful for printing web pages from mobile devices.

- AirPrint: Print wirelessly and effortlessly from your compatible iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch- no drivers needed!
